Leave the ask unmet and go back to the chairs.

They go quiet. The quiet is a bill.

You can feel the pull to stay, to add a warmer sentence, to go get them. The room doesn't move toward them. The bill sits unpaid. A warmer sentence into that quiet is the same move, softer. If you've filled that quiet before, that's the picture. You added the line. The next question didn't come to you for adding it. Or it left. What the room did. You don't teach a way to go after someone. You don't teach a performance of refusing. You show the quiet, and you show that you stayed in your chair.

The helpful version says a decent person closes the gap

The helpful version says a decent person closes the gap. I used to pay that bill and call the payment kindness. The quieter chair didn't lift out of the sort because I got warmer. The next question went where it went.

What if you leave the ask unmet and go back to the chairs?

The person sitting in that quiet is a player

The person sitting in that quiet is a player. Already placed. The quiet doesn't lift them out. If you narrate their character, you've left the minute. Come back to the bill. What it was asking your mouth to do. What your mouth did, if you're telling a time you paid it. What the next question did after. One scene. No nickname. No "they always."

The chair you stayed in. Their chair, still quiet. The sentence you didn't add. Or the sentence you did add, and where the next question went after. One of those. The room didn't owe you a reward for the warmer line. You can feel the pull in your chest to be the one who repairs the air. The air wasn't the picture. The unpaid bill was. If you stayed, say you stayed, including the part where it felt rude. If you crossed, say you crossed, and say where the question went after the warmer line. Don't sand the crossing into a lesson about warmth.

A kind of person will try to sit down here. The ones who can't sit in a quiet minute. A nickname. That's a face, even without a name. You don't need a list. The sentence can stand with the ask and nobody's character in it. Someone went quiet and the quiet had a bill on it. No villain attached. If you get lonely for a villain, that loneliness is the list trying to sit back down. The ask again, with the person removed. What they asked your mouth to do. Not who they are. If the sentence dies when you remove the face, it was still a list. Drop the face. It will feel thinner. Thin is the line.

The one that showed up, one line, then stop. The stop will feel rude. A reason will try to fill it. A story will try. A second quiet from another night will try, so you feel thorough. Leave those out. If you explain why the stop is kind, a second talk has started. The line again. The edge is the next sentence, missing.

The long version of the unpaid quiet is the full talk

The long version of the unpaid quiet is the full talk. The other hour is a real quiet, your chair, and the bill you don't pay with a warmer line.

A message after the talk. Someone waiting for words that would make a person choose them. They want the line, the order, the look. You feel the pull and you tell yourself you should just tell them what to say. Set that want down where you can see it. You leave it unmet. If your mouth starts demonstrating a line, even a bad one, cut it. A bad example still hands the move over.

The decent version says supplying the words is help. I used to compose the line in my head and call the composing a lesson. A line they can carry out is the other game. Leave the want on the table. You don't act it out to prove you refused it.

The ask, the way it arrived

The ask, the way it arrived. A text. A stay-after. A what do I say to them. Then the room you were just in, where someone got the next question and someone didn't. The ask wants you to leave that room and go work on one person. You stay with the room. Who got the next sentence. The ask can sit there unmet. You don't insult the person who asked. You don't do an impression of how they sounded. The want is plain. There isn't a script on this hour.

If your mouth starts building a sentence they could send, stop mid-word. Put the chairs back. The person they want to win is already inside the same sort as everybody else. You don't get a private game with that one chair. You don't show how a private game would go. The minute ends on the unmet ask, still on the table. The phone can light up. You leave it.

The phone, face down, after they asked. The room you were just in is still in your head. Someone got the next question there. The phone is asking you to leave that and write a line for one person. You don't pick the phone up to perform the line, even a clumsy version, even to show why it would fail. The face-down phone is one picture. The chair that already got the question is the other. They sit next to each other. You talk about the chair. The phone stays face down until you're done.

Take the face out of the sentence

Take the face out of the sentence. Someone asked for words that would make a person choose them. That's the ask. If you need a nickname to hold it, you still have a list. Say the ask again with the person removed. What they asked you to hand them. Not who they are. Thin is fine. A group hiding inside the sentence is the list coming back. There's a phone, and a room, and a question that already landed before the phone lit up.

The stop after the ask will feel rude. A reason will try to prove you're still decent. A story will try. If you explain why the stop is kind, you've started a second talk. Flat voice. What they asked. What didn't get handed over. The laugh would put somebody in the chair as a type. You already took the type out. The quiet after the ask is the picture.

If you only have the ask and you don't have a room, say that. An ask with no room under it is still an ask. You still don't fill it. You don't invent a sort so the hour has a chair. The unmet line is the picture you have.

Next time that text shows up, you say you don't have those words. You set the phone face down and you return to the chairs you were already in. Name the want once. The words they could send stay unsaid.

The person sitting in that quiet is a player

The person sitting in that quiet is a player. Already placed. The quiet doesn't lift them out of the sort. If you narrate their character, you've left the minute. Come back to the bill. What it was asking your mouth to do. What your mouth did, if you're telling a time you paid it. What the next question did after. One scene, no nickname, and no "they always.".

You will meet it again: Leave the ask unmet and go back to the chairs.
